Celebrating the Legacy of Harriet Tubman

Saturday, February 10, 2024

February 10 @ 11:00 am 1:30 pm

Local historians believe the Howard County communities of Freetown and Simpsonville were key stops on the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad mattered here due to its strategic location as slaves moved north through Maryland via Middle Patuxent and Patapsco rivers. Harriet Tubman, a leading Underground Railroad conductor, inspired the name of a segregated high school that was established in 1948. When Howard County Schools finally integrated in 1965, the Harriet Tubman School closed, making way for the integrated Atholton High School. Today, the Harriet Tubman School serves as a historic, educational, and cultural center providing visitors a chance to learn more about Tubman, the Underground Railroad, and the legacy of slavery and segregation.
